The latest from across Bougainville

ABG awareness roadshow to Central Bougainville begins

The ABG Media and Communications team has begun a month-long awareness roadshow to Central Bougainville.

The team, with a mobile community radio station (Radio Ples Lain) and video truck (Ples Lain Piksa) will visit all districts and 32 communities to broadcast the latest government information and key issues like the upcoming referendum.

ABG Media and Communications Director Adriana Schmidt said the team will bring welcome information to the people of Central at a time when many do not have access to TV, radio or newspapers.

“Our radio and video teams will spend time in each community, live broadcasting information, discussion and talkback on FM radio each afternoon and then at night show videos from Bougainville leaders on peace, reconciliation and government updates.”

The team recently completed a successful one month program in South Bougainville, and will visit North Bougainville next year.

“People are hungry for information so the team is very well received wherever they go," Ms Schmidt said.

“Bringing awareness right down to people in both radio and video format and then allowing time for questions and discussion is critical for a peaceful, unified and informed population,” Ms Schmidt said.

The team will be joined by representatives from the Department of Peace Agreement Implementation and the Bougainville Referendum Commission, as well as local and Community Government leaders.

“We want to give as many people as possible the chance to see, hear and discuss the latest information directly with our leaders. The programs have been very well received and we’re excited to be spending more time in Central Bougainville than we have ever before."

The team will be distributing free FM/SW radios and information posters ahead of each location visit.

People are advised to contact their Community Government representatives, look out for posters at local schools, clinics and stores, or text 7150 5009 for broadcast dates and times.

Radio Ples Lain broadcasts on 89.1FM, covering approximately 50kms range from each location. The program will finish with 3 nights in Arawa on 26, 27 and 28th of November.

The program is supported by the Bougainville Partnership, a joint government initiative between Bougainville, PNG, Australia and New Zealand.
