ABG Chief Secretary warns public service

The Chief Secretary to the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) Joseph Nobetau has warned the employees of the Public Service on the use of Social Media that is becoming an increasing part of daily life.

Mr Nobetau urged for all ABG Public Service employees to be reminded of their obligations under the ABG Public Service Code of Conduct and to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. "This extends to the use of Social Media," he said.

"Over recent weeks I have been alerted to range of social media posts by employees of the ABG that criticise government policy or engage in public commentary on matters related to government business. This is not appropriate. As representatives of the ABG any comments made in relation to ABG business and activities can be construed as being the views of the ABG," he said.

Mr Nobetau said that all staff there are placed on notice not to engage in public commentary via social media or any other form that could relflect poorly on the Government.

"If you have concerns regarding matters related to your work, or the work of the public service more broadly, it is appropriate that you address these to senior managers in the first instance," he added.

"Officers who are found to be engaging in ongoing commentary related to government matters will face disciplinary action under the Public Services (Management and Administration) Act 2014."
