ABG to beef up law and justice sector

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) will put more funding to its law and justice sector to build its capacity to effectively address law and order issues in the region.

According to the President Hon. John L. Momis, law and order is an immediate priority of the government to deal with the rise in law and order issues – especially the recent unlawful activities led by a group of disgruntled service providers who have been issuing threats to Air Nuigini which have led to the disruption of the flight into the region today.

Mr Momis, said that it gave a bad impression to the international community and the national government when the region was preparing for the referendum which is set for June 15 2019, just next year.

Mr Momis also called for the police to charge those involved and urged for support from law-abiding citizens.

"I want to tell the people of Bougainville to not to condone to this kind of behavior and the police must perform. We will ensure this happens by making funding available and so the police must be equipped to deal with similar situations that arise,” President Momis affairmed.

"We can no longer tolerate few people who is taking the law into their own hands which is detrimental to our alternate objective of determining our future."

A burning issue, which ABG is also working hard to resolve is the questions to be put forward, which needed both the national government and ABG to agree about at the Joint Supervisory Body meeting (JSB).

Mr Momis said that he was fighting hard for a resolution to be met by both governments and hopes that the next meeting to be held sometimes in July this year, will resolve that.

The date of the JSB is yet to be confirmed but the venue will take place in Port Moresby.

President Momis was speaking at the media conference at his residence on Friday, June 13, at Kubu, Buka. The conference occurred after word reached the Presidents office that Air Nuigini had suspended its flights to Buka as a result of threats made by the same group of service providers who had stormed the airport last month, to demand for government to ensure  their outstanding payments are settled.
