Bougainville to host key meetings

The Autonomous Bougainville Government is preparing to receive and host the Prime Minister of PNG and his delegation for a series of meetings in Bougainville this month.

Following discussions between both governments in recent weeks, leaders have agreed that the Joint Supervisory Body meeting will take place in Buin on Friday 23rd August.

This week, technical teams from both the ABG and National Government led by Bougainville and National Government Chief Secretaries, will be meeting in Port Moresby to discuss key issues to be addressed and decided on in the upcoming JSB meeting.

Significant issues to be discussed include an official endorsement of the agreed final dates for polling and issue of writs, updates on weapons disposal, reconciliation, referendum security and post referendum transition matters among others.

The Prime Minister and his delegation will be in Buka next week, where the Prime Minister will give a special address to the Bougainville House of Representatives in its parliament session on Wednesday 21st August.

There will also be a meeting of the National Executive Council in Buka on Thursday 22nd August before the JSB meeting.

The ABG and the National Government are fully committed to implementing the Bougainville Referendum in accordance with the Peace Agreement – and this includes a commitment to implementing the referendum on Bougainville’s future political status.
