Bougainville CG Elections progressing well

THE Bougainville Community Government Elections are currently progressing well.

According to the acting Bougainville Electoral Commissioner, Mr George Manu, polling has commenced as scheduled in South Bougainville, as well as in some Central and North Bougainville districts.

“I am happy to announce that the Bougainville Community Government Election is progressing smoothly. We have not experienced any incidents since the commencement of elections on Monday this week,” said Mr Manu.

Mr Manu, who is currently visiting South and Central Bougainville to observe the elections there, as well as providing moral support to election officials, said he was very pleased with the turnout of voters.

“In some ward assemblies that I visited in South Bougainville, I have seen that more than 200 voters have registered and voted. This again is another positive sign that many people are taking part in this community government election.”

Provisional declarations have been made in the ward assemblies that have already observed their elections.

These results are classified as provisional, as formal declarations of these elected ward assembly members will be made by Mr Manu once the community government elections are completed.

According to reports from returning officers in South Bougainville, Siwai District will be completing their elections today while Buin, Bana and Torokina districts will be completing theirs this Friday.

In Central Bougainville, elections are progressing well in the Wakunai District and should be complete this Friday while Kieta and Panguna districts will commence their elections next week.
According to the Returning Officers for Panguna and Kieta, all community governments in their areas will be conducting their election procedural trainings this week.
Both ROs said they are positive that all elections in their areas would be complete before the end of next week.

In the northern region, elections have already commenced in Halia, Haku and Tonsu community governments in Buka and should be complete by tomorrow (Thursday 060417).
All other community governments in North Bougainville including the Atolls are scheduled to conduct their elections next week.

Mr Manu is confident that all elections throughout the region will be completed before the 27th of April.

Following the completion of the elections, the ROs and AROs will forward their provisional results, as well as their election reports, to Mr Manu.
If the results are satisfactory, the Commissioner will then formally declare the elected members of each respective ward assemblies in Bougainville.

If the results are not satisfactory, the Commissioner will nullify the provisional declarations of the concerned ward assemblies, before setting a new date for elections to be held in the ward assemblies concerned.
