Controller clarifies road-blocks in South and Central Bougainville
Bougainville Emergency Controller, Francis Tokura, clarified today that there are no restrictions in place that prevents locals to commute on the South and Central Bougainville highways.
Mr Tokura made this announcement following reports that roadblocks have been set up in specific locations in Central and South Bougainville where commuters have been asked to turn back on the highways.
He said the emergency orders and police checks are strictly to ensure that motorists adhere to the restrictions on number of passengers and that they observe general traffic rules and also practice social distancing in passenger seating.
Mr Tokura also appealed to community leaders and the general public for cooperation during the emergency period.
"I would like to appeal to everyone for your understanding and cooperation as we progress into the fourth day of the SoE currently in place in Bougainville," he said.
"As I have been stressing, COVID-19 does not discriminate and will not stop at anything. So to prevent the disease from spreading to our small island, the best thing to do is to adhere to orders that have been issued and practice messages that our COVID-19 response team have been disseminating."
Mr Tokura urged Constituency Leaders to assist the police by ensuring that youths are not involved in homebrew or drug consumption, and to encourage people to remain at home and avoid unnecessary travels.
