Enrolment Exercise to commence in Bougainville

The enrolment drive for the 2017 National Election will soon commence in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

All returning officers and Assistant Returning Officers began their training on voter enrolment this week in Buka.

These election officials will then return to their respective districts to train awareness agents before they (agents) can carry out the enrolment exercise.

According to the Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commissioner, the enrolment exercise will take a maximum of 21 days to conduct and complete.

The enrolment agents will be issued with three different types of claims for enrolment forms, including new enrolment, transfer-in enrolment and provisional enrolment.

The new enrolment form will be given to those eligible voters whose names cannot be located on the working roll. The transfer-in enrolment form will be given to those eligible voters who have voted in previous elections but have now moved and settled in a new location for the past six months or more.

Provisional enrolment form will be issued to those that will be turning 18 years old before or on the date scheduled for the issue of writs for the national election next year.

The date for the issue of writs has been fixed for the 20th of April 2017, which means that those that will be categorized under the provisional enrolment category should have been born before or on the 20th of April 1999.

PNG Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato has always emphasized the need for the improvement of the electoral roll so that all eligible voters be enrolled and able to cast their votes in next year’s election.

All eligible voters in Bougainville are urged to check their names on the working roll during the enrolment period so they will be able to exercise their democratic right in electing leaders in the national election.
