Growing concerns on achieving a credible referendum outcome

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) is concerned about achieving a peaceful and credible outcome after the referendum (Bougainville).

This was according to the Acting Secretary of the Department of Peace Agreement Implementations (DPAI) Mr Denis Kuai.

Mr Kuai said that in order to achieve a credible outcome, both governments of Bougainville and Papua New Guinea must abide by the accepted international standard of democracy.

“That meant that every people of Bougainville must be enrolled and they must know what they are actually voting for and what is expected of the outcome after the vote,” he said.

The voters must know what the two options on greater autonomy and independence really mean, he added.

The ABG and GoPNG would make the decision of what the descriptions would be of the two options by end of March, he said.

The referendum date is now set to take place on October 12 with the issue of writs on August 16 this year.
