Illegal weapons in AROB to be addressed as law and order issues

The governments of Bougainville and Papua New Guinea have agreed that all illegal weapons in Bougainville will be addressed through enforcement of the PNG Firearms Act.

This was one of the resolutions passed in the Joint Supervisory Body meeting in Port Moresby last week.

In the discussions, the Bougainville and PNG leaders noted that the weapons disposal process under the requirements of the Weapons Disposal pillar of the Peace Agreement has been fully complied with and that all weapons related issues are now matters of law and order.

The JSB has further directed the Ministries of National Bougainville Affairs and Post-Referendum Consultation, to develop peace-building advocacy programs and reintegration and rehabilitation programs for Veterans that promote continued peace within Bougainville and with PNG and internationally.

The leaders also agreed that all remaining powers and functions must immediately be transferred to the ABG with priority given to police powers and functions, including other law enforcement agencies.
