Independent Board of Inquiry to investigate corruption allegations

An Independent Board of Inquiry has been launched to uncover how K2.7 million earmarked for the Bougainville Disaster Office has gone missing.

Respected former National Ombudsman and Police Commissioner Sir Ila Geno has been appointed to lead the independent investigation.

President Momis, who is also Chair of Bougainville Senior Appointments Committee, confirmed that a number of departmental secretaries had been suspended while the independent inquiry is completed.

“The independent inquiry will get to the bottom of theft of government funds”, Mr Momis said.

“This money belongs to the public, to fund government services to the people, not corrupt officials.”

"The ABG is serious about stamping out corruption. We must embed good governance and due process in everything we do if we are to rise to meet .”
Sir Geno’s report will be submitted to the Bougainville Senior Appointments Committee, a unique committee established to provide independent oversight of ABG public service appointments.

Committee representatives Hubert Kikira, Rev. Tim Arthur, Dr Naomi Tulaha and Speaker Simon Pentanu and President Momis are providing the independent oversight of the inquiry and any outcomes to ensure due process is followed regarding the allegations of corruption.
