Joint key messages on Bougainville referendum released

The governments of Bougainville and Papua New Guinea have released key messages for awareness in preparation for the upcoming referendum.

This follows the joint endorsement of the Joint Key Messages on Bougainville Peace Agreement and Referendum, a document that responds to frequently asked questions from the public.

Chief Secretary to the Autonomous Bougainville Government, Joseph Nobetau, described the release of this information as timely and vital to support awareness efforts of the government and its stakeholders.

“These messages are timely, relevant and provide accurate information that will support the face to face awareness undertaken by the ABG and its partners, as well as for Bougainvilleans living outside Bougainville who are hungry for factual, credible and approved information on the referendum process.

“I assure our people that the public service will continue to develop these information support materials as key issues are decided by the two governments,” he said.

He further thanked his National Government counterpart, Isaac Lupari, for the commitment and effort displayed in ensuring timely endorsement of the key messages.

The Chief Secretary also noted that the two governments will soon embark on a nationwide awareness of the Bougainville Referendum, while the ABG’s Directorate of Media and Communications will begin its community-based awareness program next week in North Bougainville, before moving on to the Central and South Regions.

The jointly endorsed key messages will be disseminated during the community awareness activities through printed, audio and visual materials.
