The latest from across Bougainville

MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT HON RAYMOND MASONO

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) and its people would like to convey their deepest condolences to the families and victims of the recent earthquake disaster in Hela, Southern Highlands, Western and Enga Provinces.

ABG Vice President Honorable Raymond Masono said this disaster was an unprecedented event that has cost people’s lives, properties and basic services of health, education, communications and infrastructure.

“This was a disastrous event that has happened at an unfortunate time. A lot of innocent lives have been lost, important infrastructure and people’s properties have been destroyed by the violent earthquake.”

“Bougainville and its people sympathize with the people of the Highlands region who have been severely affected by the earthquake.”

On that note, Vice President Masono also commended the National Government for taking the appropriate response by declaring a state of emergency in the Highlands earthquake disaster areas.

“On behalf of the ABG, I would also like to acknowledge the national government’s response efforts of declaring a State of Emergency and allocating K450 million for relief operations and restoration of basic services”

“This pro-active response from the national government will now allow for the much needed relief assistance to be fast-tracked and those who are severely affected can receive the assistance they require in this crucial period”, he said.
