On 22 March 2019, following the handing down of the findings by a Board of Inquiry established under Section 33 of the Bougainville Senior Appointments Act 2014, a decision was made to dismiss Secretary James Tanis from office. Up until the time of his dismiss Mr Tanis has been ABG Secretary for Peace Agreement Implementation.

Whilst the circumstances related to Mr Tanis dismissal are disappointing, this does not detract from substantial role that he has played in advancing peace in Bougainville. I want to acknowledge that contribution and I would ask that individuals refrain from speculating regarding the particular circumstances surrounding the Board's findings. These are now a matter for further consideration by the Government.

Mr Tanis remains a very active stakeholder in peace process, both as a former President and community leader. He remains deserving of our respect and I have no doubt that in this capacity, Mr Tanis will continue to advance the interests of peace in Bougainville.

Mr Dennis Kuiai will continue to act as Secretary for the Department of Peace Agreement Implementation, pending permanent filling and the announcement of a longer term Acting Appointment by the Bougainville Executive Council.
