Momis condemns violence
ABG President Grand Chief Dr John Momis has condemn the recent violence that has seen the deaths of two people in unrelated incidents and more than thirty houses burnt down at Sohano Island.
President Momis has urged the people of Bougainville to refrain from taking the law into their hands by retaliatory measures.
“At this very crucial juncture on Bougainville our people must refrain from compromising Bougainville’s journey to self-determination,” President Momis said,
“I am appealing to the families of those involved to allow the police to carry out its investigations and get to the bottom of the issue,” he added.
“Our people must unite and condemn these actions as one people, this is a law and order issue and we must not regionalize it or make seem as such,” Momis said.
“I am now calling on the Bougainville Police Service as well as the leaders from South and North Bougainville to ensure that this problem does not escalate any further,” he added.
President Momis said that he sympathized with the innocent families on Sohano Island whose properties were destroyed by people who retaliated against the murder of the young man on Friday.
With the dates of Bougainville’s Referendum confirmed with August 17, 2019 as the issue of writs and October 12, 2019 as the start of polling Bougainville must tread carefully if it wants to successfully implement the process.
The recent Joint Supervisory Meeting Body has been one of the most successful that has emphasized the progress of the autonomous arrangements on Bougainville.
The Bougainville leadership has cautioned the people from any form of instability that may threaten the outcome of the referendum.
President Momis continues to urge the people to focus on unity, peace and stability on Bougainville while the ABG continues to deal with the political intricacies of the autonomous arrangements.
