Momis: Peace is non-negotiable
The President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville Grand Chief Dr John Momis, has called on the people of Bougainville to ensure that peace is maintained before, during and after the referendum.
“Whatever the outcome, it must be both peaceful and mutually acceptable. I have advocated for this, that a good process will lead to a good outcome, but maintaining peace is non-negotiable,” he said.
President Momis also commended the efforts of the ABG Members in ensuring that their constituents are well-informed and referendum-ready.
“I am confident that our people have a greater understanding of key aspects of the referendum and we must continue these awareness efforts into the post-referendum period to ensure our people are not left in the dark about what happens next,” he said.
With four days to go before polling commences, the people of Bougainville have been urged to remain focused and stand united with the government to ensure a credible and safe referendum is delivered.
“2019 goes down in history as the year where Bougainvilleans finally get to express their view about their future political status in the referendum. It is a year where we can demonstrate to the world that we are a mature and democratic people.”
“This is the year that the will of the people of Bougainville will be heard. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us Bougainvilleans. We should be proud of this.”
“We must speak with one voice all the way, not only to the ballot box but also in the post-referendum period,” said Momis.
President Momis also called on the people to support the Bougainville Police Service and the Referendum Regional Police Support Mission to ensure a safe polling and counting period for Bougainville.
