Momis: Permanent peace on Bougainville vital for credible outcome

Permanent peace on Bougainville necessitates a credible outcome of the Referendum which in turn institutes stability within the government and the people of Bougainville.

Albert Einstein once said “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.”

For us to realise our ultimate political goal we must first and foremost unite. This means we must will ourselves to have peace within Bougainville, within the government and within our people.

To have peace we must understand each other’s values, motives and our differences. We must also have an open channel of communication that is reactive and transparent.

Understanding does not mean being in agreement just as unity amongst our people does not mean uniformity. Understanding each other allows us to understand our respective motives and differences and reach a consensus.

It is the ideals of social acceptance through conformity but not at the expense of our individuality. It is within our nature to retain our individuality for man is by nature self-determining.

Peace and unity must complement each other at every turn. It is a very important aspect of peace building and being referendum ready.

The Bougainville Peace Agreement is the blueprint for our journey to self-determination, it is the foundation of the autonomous arrangements on Bougainville and it is the road map to our ultimate political future. Despite the BPA being a constitutionalized document the National Government continues to disavow its responsibility to meeting its commitment to the BPA.

Whilst this has greatly limited the effective implementation of our autonomous government let us not continue to languish and be deterred to move forward.

We are trailblazers forging a new path into the unknown with the mettle and veracity to face any challenge that comes our way.

We are a resilient people who stand on an important juncture in our history and we are a people charged to decide our ultimate political future that is within the confines of democratic values and international best practice standards.

I must remind you all once again that our peace must not only be a peace of our time but a peace for all time to come.

Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God. We are a highly favoured people for we are the peacemakers called to be the people of the almighty God.
