Ongoing dialogue key to peaceful outcome

The President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Hon. Chief Dr John Momis says he is heartened by the commitment shown by the Prime Minister and his cabinet to work with the ABG in finding a peaceful solution for the region.

“Our working relationship with the government of PNG has taken on a new dimension.,” Momis said.

“It is encouraging to hear that the Prime Minister is not only committed to work with the ABG, but is already showing signs that he’s prepared to take some concrete measures to enable the people of Bougainville to get their teeth into something, economic development.”

President Momis made these remarks in response to Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape’s address to the Bougainville House of Representatives this afternoon, where he announced the NEC meeting resolution approving K1 billion facility for Bougainville over the next ten years.

“Economic independence must precede every other conversation.” Marape stated

“In the case of Bougainville, our National Government will transfer full revenue raising powers to the regional government and we will assist monitor your collections in fisheries, forestry, agriculture and other industries that you Bougainvilleans may choose to undertake.”

President Momis further explained that the BPA stipulates that the two governments must collaboratively engage to find a peaceful negotiated outcome after the referendum.

“And for that to happen, we must enable people to participate in the social, economic, political life and in this way they will have a sense of fulfillment and they will gain a sense of confidence that the future holds something good and something better,” Momis said.

The President also announced today in Parliament, that the Joint Supervisory Body meeting will now be held in Buka tomorrow, Thursday 12th September.
