President calls for peaceful elections

The primary focus for Bougainville should be to maintain peace and creating a just and democratic government for the people of Bougainville.

ABG President Grand Chief Dr John Momis made this statement following the recent allegations of irregularities in the conduct of the ABG 2020 Elections.

“I call on our people to uphold the rule of law and the rules that govern this election. We must all work together to avoid all corrupt practices during this election period and allow due process to take its course,” he said.

“This ABG 2020 Election is paramount – it is this new government that will lead the way for consultations with the National Government on the 2019 Referendum result, and the people have the power to choose the right leaders who will bring Bougainville to its destiny.”

“The integrity of this election is of significant importance. We must work together with our community leaders, polling officials, police officers and fellow Bougainvilleans, to protect and uphold the integrity of this election.”

President Momis urged all Bougainvilleans to vote wisely and to respect all fellow Bougainvilleans’ democratic right to vote freely and fairly.

“We are being closely watched by the international community in this election, we also have local and international observers on the ground observing the electoral process.

“We must prove to them and most importantly to ourselves that, we are united, we respect the rule of law, we will continue to fight corruption and above all we will uphold the peace that we had worked tremendously hard to achieve,” Momis said.

The President also called on the Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commission and the Bougainville Police Service to immediately deal with the allegations of election irregularities and ensure that all personnel who may be involved in any wrong-doing must face the full force of the law.

President Momis reminded all Bougainvilleans to continue to use the Bougainville Peace Agreement to guide us all towards a weapons-free, peaceful, well-governed and self-determined future for Bougainville.

“Let us all walk this journey together as one people and one voice to decide our leaders for this next government that will lead us to our ultimate political future that is within the confines of democratic values and international best practice standards.”
