Return of Writs program set for today

Bougainville Electoral Commissioner George Manu has confirmed that the Return of Writs for the 2020 Bougainville General Elections will happen today.

This afternoon at 3pm (BST), the Bougainville Electoral Commissioner will officially return the writs to the outgoing Speaker of the Bougainville House of Representatives, Simon Pentanu.

The Clerk of the Bougainville House of Representatives, Robert Tapi, has released the official program for the event which will begin with the unveiling of the Members’ Ceremonial Entrance area at the Bougainville parliament grounds.

The Ceremonial Entrance resembles the traditional meeting house which is commonly referred to as a ‘tsuhana’ in North Bougainville.

After the unveiling of the ceremonial entrance, official statements will then be given by the Clerk of Parliament, Bougainville Electoral Commissioner and Outgoing Speaker of the Bougainville House of Representatives.

Following the Return of Writs on Thursday 24 September, there will be a swearing-in ceremony for the President-elect, Ishmael Toroama and the Caretaker Bougainville Executive Council. This ceremony will be administered by Justice Sir Kina Bona of the National and Supreme Court of Justice at Parliament House on Friday 25 September 2020.
