School community benefits from road improvements
Students and teachers at Iaun Primary School in the Tinputz district of Bougainville can now get to school more easily thanks to a road resealing project funded through the Papua New Guinea-Australia Partnership. Head teacher, Raelyn Kaumu, is delighted with the recent works on the road outside her school.
“The improvements to the road, including road safety measures, mean my students are now safer on their way to and from school. The resealed surface also means less dust in my classrooms. This project is a fantastic boost to our community,” Ms Kaumu said.
Works include repairing and resealing over seven kilometres of the main trunk road as well as improvements to road drainage. The K7 million project has employed 45 local residents and is expected to be completed in July.

Autonomous Bougainville Government Minister for Technical Services, the Hon. Luke Karaston, said: “The resealed road and improved drainage will mean tangible benefits for the community and will help to strengthen connectivity between Buka and Arawa.”
Secretary for the Department of Technical Services, Bernard Tzilu, sees this project as another success for the partnership with Australia.
“Working with Australia continues to be an important part of maintaining our trunk roads. This priority project in Tinputz is a great example of how a safer, more reliable road network supports the delivery of essential services,” said Mr Tzilu.
This project is delivered through the Papua New Guinea – Australia Transport Sector Support Program. The partnership includes maintenance on 318 kilometres of Bougainville’s 600 kilometre main road network.
