Tokura: Fraud Squad investigations not political

The ongoing investigations by the Fraud Squad in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville are not political in nature.

This was the statement made by Acting Commissioner of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, Francis Tokura, following claims on social media that the investigations were being targeted at destabilizing Bougainville before the referendum.

“As Acting Commissioner of Pilice for the RPNGC and as the substantive Head of the Bougainville Public Service, I want to make it clear that the investigations taking place are the result of allegations made regarding a number of audits and financial matters,” he explained.

“These investigations are not political in nature. They do not target any particular individual or individuals. When an allegation is raised the RPNGC and BPS have an obligation to investigate and that is what is now taking place. Lawful process must be allowed to take place,” Tokura said.

The Acting Commissioner appealed to the public and the broader community to allow the police to undertake this important work, and warned that any person attempting to disrupt or undermine these investigations will be taken as obstruction of justice.
