UN boost supports for Bougainville

By Tanya Lahies The Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, United Nations Mr Miroslav Jenca paid a second visit to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville today. Mr Jenca travelled with his delegation namely; 1. Roy Trivedy, United Resident Coordinator to PNG 2. Sonja Bachman, Team Leader, Asia Pacific Division, Department of Political Affairs, UN 3. Ambassador Max Rai, Permanent Representatives of Papua New Guinea to the United Nations 4. Dr John Balavu, Director General, Public Policy,Health and Governance, Prime Minister's Office 5. Christopher Asa, Director General, Public Policy, Health and Governance, Prime Minister's Office 6. Lawrence Bassie, UNDP-PBF Coordinator, Bougainville and 7. Rui Flores, UN Liaison Officer, Bougainville. The delegation were received and welcomed by the Nissan dancing group who embraced the visitors with a traditional gesture and then greeted by the Vice President, Hon Raymond Masono, a few Members of the House of Representatives and Heads of Departments including members of the national government. Vice President Hon Raymond Masono welcomed the UN delegation on behalf of the President Chief Dr John Momis who met with them in the afternoon. Member for North with the National Government, Hon William Nakin, also officially welcomed the delegates. The Assistant Secretary- General for Political Affairs, United Nations, Mr Miroslav Jenca was very pleased of the welcome ceremony. He said: "It is the warmest welcome offered to me...I am so proud to receive with my delegations here." Mr Jenca was in Malaysia with the Secretary General for UN Mr Antonio Guterres before traveling to Buka. Mr Jenca said: "Mr Guterres asked me to send you all the best regards and his wish for peace." "United Nations and Papua New Guinea have been supporting Bougainville and we would like to continue with this support to ensure peace, stability and prosperity prevail," he said. Mr Jenca is pleased to hear about the involvement of more women and gender based programs in Bougainville and said that he looks forward to visiting again and learning more about the region. Ambassador Max Rai, Permanent Representatives of Papua New Guinea to the United Nations, was a witness of the signing of the Bougainville Peace Agreement in 2001 and affirmed that he spoke twice to the secretary about the referendum and when the Prime Minister was presented at the UN General Assembly. "I asked him let's drop all other issues and talk about Bougainville and he did." "The secretary general was very impressed and he is very supportive." "I'm really glad the issue is under world radar and I'll make it my business to ensure that the end product before and after the referendum goes well." "I'm making it my business to work closely with everyone in Bougainville and the national government to ensure that the outcome is good for everyone and acceptable internationally," he added.
