Ward recorders ready to implement referendum roll update

More than two hundred ward recorders were inducted on their roles in a workshop facilitated by the Department of Community Government during the month of June. The induction was part of a two-day workshop which also involved ward members from respective Community Governments.

The induction covered recorders roles in the upcoming Referendum roll and preparatory data collection including household records; ward profiles and the Peace and Security mapping checklist.

‘’This is the first time information like this is being communicated at this level. We, the ward recorders, are glad to have been informed about the activities our government has embarked on towards preparing wards and communities. Also, we are excited to be taking part in the preparations especially in referendum roll update,’’ said Pais Marko, a ward recorder from Rumba village in South Nasioi.

The ward recorders form an integral part of the community government structure whose core function is to update and maintain the wards official records.

There are now 444 wards in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville under the new Community Government structure which came into effect in 2016.

The induction workshop was facilitated by staff from key ABG agencies particularly the Parliamentary Services, Department of Peace Agreement Implementation, Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commission and Department of Community Development.

The workshop was made possible through the support of UN Women through the Gender and Youth Promotion Initiative, a project funded by the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
