Women’s peace circle celebrates food day

By Tanya Lahies

The women of Taonita Teop in the Tinputs District gathered together on Wednesday, 18th October to celebrate World Food Day.

An initiative of the Teop Taonita Women Peace Circle and supported by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), the two-day event gathered families from the village and ward, to hear messages about the importance of healthy living, food security and peace keeping.

Secretary of DPI, Thomas Betitis, Veteran Ishmael Toroama and Community Government, Director Ms Dona Pearson were some of the invited guests.

A very emotional Ms Dona Pearson praised her women folks for taking the initiative.

“It’s little activities like this which the Community Government wants to see more of. That is promoting peace, self-reliance and moving forward in the rural area”, Ms Pearson said.

The Women Peace Circle initiated this activity expecting it to be a small event, yet it became a celebration, gathering villagers and students of the ward.

Ms Pearson donated a gift of a solar powered lamp from the Community Government to the Women Peace Circle group to provide lighting for their meetings.
