The target date for a referendum to decide on Bougainville’s political future has been set as 15 June 2019. The delayed referendum is a key milestone contained in a political settlement, the Bougainville Peace Agreement (BPA), which sought to reconcile a violent conflict from 1988–1997.
Bougainville Peace Agreement Supplement
The Bougainville Peace Agreement is a joint creation of the government of PNG and Bougainville leaders. It was heralded as a world class peace document which put to end the worst ever conflict amongst Pacific Island peoples. Today we commemorate the day that this unique document was signed on August 30, 2001 in Arawa. The founding principle of the Bougainville Peace Agreement - Peace by Peaceful Means is the way forward for Bougainville to ensure that we have lasting peace in our journey towards self-determination.
