The latest from across Bougainville

Condolence Message on the passing of the late Solomon Islands High Commissioner to PNG

The Solomon Islands have long shared strong traditional and familial bonds with Bougainville. These ties have created a relationship that has stood the test of time and continues to prevail to this day. In times of celebration and in times of loss, Bougainville will always honor this relationship by supporting our Solomon Islands brothers and sisters.

It is in homage to these ties that I join the rest of Papua New Guinea to mourn the loss of the Late Solomon Islands High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency, Barnabas Anga. His untimely passing is a loss to the international community who are committed to peace and prosperity within the Melanesian Region and the greater Pacific.

I am shocked to learn of the Late High Commissioner His Excellency Barnabas Anga’s passing. It was only last week that he joined the Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and I in Enga Province as guests of Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas for the Joint Consultations and the Joint Supervisory Body Meeting.

I pay tribute to a humble man who showed courage in supporting the process of finding a lasting solution to Bougainville’s political journey. I commend his contribution to the Melanesian geopolitics of the region and more importantly his support during the Referendum in 2019 and the ongoing Joint Consultations with the Government of Papua New Guinea.

As President of the ABG I extend my government and people’s deepest sympathies to Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands Hon. Manasseh Sogavare, the Government and people of the Solomon Islands and the family of the Late His Excellency Barnabas Anga. Bougainville mourns with you and share in your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. May he Rest in Eternal Peace.

Hon. Ishmael Toroama MHR

President
