Leaders support new measures for COVID-19

ABG Minister for Public Service and Acting Chairman of the Ministerial Taskforce for COVID-19 Honorable Emmanuel Carlos Kaetavara in supporting the Regional Pandemic Controller said this pandemic was serious in the sense that lives have been lost and he called on Bougainvilleans to be responsible and comply with the public health measures that were being issued.

He also called on the public servants to take the lead in complying with these measures and refrain from spreading information on social media.

"I have sought legal opinion from the Justice Department on dealing with public servants spreading information on social media that undermines the efforts of the ABG in relation to tackling COVID-19," Minister Kaetavara said.

Buka Town Acting Manager Fidelis Semoso shared similar sentiments and called on all Bougainvilleans to comply with the measures issued, stressing that his office will be setting up teams to monitor that those coming into town must comply with these measures.

“Simple things like wearing of face masks is mandatory and those coming into town  must always wear a mask, public transports travelling into town must not be overloaded, social distancing must be practiced and business houses must have hand washing facilities within their settings,” he said.

Semoso said he will be working closely with the Bougainville Police Service and the Buka Business Association (BBA) to ensure that these measures are complied with.

BBA Chairman Robert Critchley has thanked the government for putting out these measures and assured the government and the Regional Pandemic Controller that he will ensure the business houses in Buka comply with the public health measures.

“Our people ‘s health is paramount and in order to protect them as our consumers and our business as well, we will ensure that masks are worn at all times, hand washing facilities are available and encourage business houses to get their staff to be vaccinated,” Mr. Cricthley said.

Deputy Pandemic Controller and Assistant Police Commissioner Francis Tokura also called on the public to comply with the public health measures, adding that his police personnel will be setting up road blocks to monitor the travelling public.

“This road blocks are to ensure that we all follow the measures such as wearing of face masks, practice social distancing and vehicles are not overloaded,” he said.

“We are here to serve you and my police officers will be out there not to harass or intimidate you but make sure that you all follow the rules and in doing so avoid the spread of covid-19,” he said.

The general public has also been reminded that vaccination is currently underway and all are encouraged to get vaccinated to protect yourselves, your families and your community from COVID-19.
