President launches independence readiness mission in South

The Autonomous Bougainville Government's position on independence for Bougainville has given momentum to the region's independence readiness preparations.

This position was outlined by President Ishmael Toroama during the first Joint Post Referendum Consultations with the National Government in the East New Britain Province two weeks ago.

To progress the independence readiness initiative President Toroama is currently in South Bougainville to launch Independence Ready Mission for three constituencies.

Yesterday President Toroama launched the program for Lato Constituency in Bana District with constituency Member Melvin Isiras Wilolopa.

Today the President launched the program for Ramu Constituency in the Siwai District with its Member and Minister for Community Government Thomas Pata'aku.

President Toroama told the people of Lato and Ramu that apart from outlining the government's position on independence he has also given a timeline for when Bougainville must attain its independence from Papua New Guinea.

“During the consultations I told the National Government side that Bougainville must assume self-government in 2022 and eventual independence in 2025,” President Toroama said.

“We have presented our independence plan to the National Government and to compliment this plan the ABG is embarking on several development and economic projects for Bougainville,” President Toroama added.

President Toroama said the road would be difficult but the referendum results have clearly shown the people's willingness to be an independent sovereign nation.

He urged unity, hard work and perseverance by the people to achieve Bougainville’s ultimate political destiny.

President Toroama is being accompanied by Vice President Patrick Nisira, Attorney General Ezekiel Massat as he travels throughout South Bougainville.

President Toroama will launch the independence ready mission for the Kopi Constituency in the Siwai District tomorrow.
