The latest from across Bougainville

Regional launches of Bougainville Independence Mission completed today

The Autonomous Bougainville Government has completed the regional launches of its Independence Ready Mission Implementation for North, Central and South Bougainville.

President Ishmael Toroama launched the program for South Bougainville in Buin Town today which paves way for the southern constituencies to prepare their independence ready programs.

President Toroama echoed his message on unity and hard work amongst the people as they prepare for independence.

“We must no longer dream about independence instead we must materialize this dream in the way that we work, in our attitude to life and having respect for our fellow Bougainvilleans and our government the ABG,” President Toroama said.

“Southerners have had a history of claiming to be proponents of the secessionist movement in the 1970’s, if that is the case then I challenge the people and leaders of South Bougainville to transform this region into being independence ready,” President Toroama said.

President Toroama said apart from the socioeconomic reforms that the ABG has been fostering, human development is another important factor for Bougainville to be ready to become independent.

He charged the people of South Bougainville to mold the next generation to become responsible and meaningful citizens of an independent Bougainville.

“Our children must become citizens imbued with the values of civic duty and patriotic commitment to the development of a prosperous and independent Bougainville,” President Toroama said.

“We must look to the future and ask ourselves who is going to run our government and our nation if we forget to groom the next generation by educating them and teaching them social responsibility,” President Toroama added.

“It is time now that we materialize our aspirations for an independent Bougainville. Prepare your constituencies and believe in the fourth House of the ABG to consult and negotiate on your behalf with the National Government for our ultimate political future,” President Toroama said.
