Security important for Bougainville’s journey

Security is very important for Bougainville in this political journey towards independence.

This is according to ABG Minister for Mining and Member for Kokoda Constituency Honorable Rodney Osioko.

Speaking to the members of the Independence Readiness Committee in Kokoda this week, Mr. Osioko called on them to work together to ensure that directions from the government of the day are delivered to the people.

“Security is very important for us in this journey as it is a very big challenge for our government and we have a big responsibility to help our people in the constituencies to prepare for independence,” he said.

He added that security and economy can affect a region to become an independent nation thus the people needed to work together with the government to support Bougainville’s desire to become an independent state.

“If there is no security, there will be no economy to run a country and we all voted for independence so as such we should support the government, ensure there security is paramount in our constituencies and support the economic activities within our region,” Honorable Osioko said.

The independence readiness mission is a motion that was passed in the ABG Parliament last year for constituencies through the leadership of its ABG Parliamentarians, Community Government and stakeholders to plan and prepare their constituents for independence.

ABG Department of Bougainville Independence Mission Implementation has taken the lead in conducting inductions for the constituency committees, with support from the ABG Parliamentary Services, ABG Department of Community Government and the ABG Department of President and Bougainville Executive Council.

The Kokoda Constituency Independence-ready committee members were inducted on their roles and responsibilities, swore an oath to be bound by law to carry out their duties and encouraged to disseminate information down to the ward levels.

The Kokoda Constituency Independence-ready committee are comprised of the ABG Constituency member as the chair of the committee, Community Government chairperson as the deputy chair, community government vice chairpersons, village recorders and other sector representatives like the women, church, youths and veterans.

To be independence ready, specific benchmarks including good governance, law and order, availability of social services and options for boosting Bougainville’s economy among others, have been set for respective constituencies to tick off before declaring themselves as independence ready.

These broad categories will be translated into simple goals that should be achieved by respective constituencies across the region.

Seven constituencies out of eight in Central Bougainville have completed inductions with one more constituency and two regional seats to be done by this week.
