Stop work notice issued on illegal developments in Buka Town

The ABG Department of Lands and Physical Planning and the Buka Urban Town Council today issued a Stop Work Notice on all illegal and unapproved developments in Buka Town.

In a joint Circular signed by ABG Acting Secretary for Lands, James Kunnopi and Buka Urban Town Manager Fidelis Semoso, notified the general public that this stop work notice covers areas in and around the vicinity of Buka Town including Hutjena, Hahela, Kubu, Buka Town Center and Sohano Island.

The stop work notice is issued in accordance with Section 63 of the Bougainville Physical Planning Act 2013 and applies to business houses, former land owners, developers/occupiers, and the general public and states that any illegal and unapproved developments and operations must be stopped effective as of the issuance of the notice.

Going forward, any new developments within Buka Town will have to be granted Physical Planning permission and Building Board approval before construction begins.

The joint Circular further stated that failure to comply with the Stop Work Notice is an offence for which the penalty is a fine of up to K5,000.00 for individuals and up to K10,000.00 for corporate bodies with additional default penalties.
