Toroama happy with Eivo-Torau Effort

President Ishmael Toroama has welcomed the efforts by the Eivo-Torau Constituency to move past their differences to create economic development on their lands. The President was a witness to the Eivo-Torau Constituency reconciliation ceremony today at the Manetai Catholic Parish as the people reconciled their differences from the Bougainville Crisis. This reconciliation would pave way for the redevelopment of the defunct Manetai Limestone Project in the constituency. President Toroama pledged the ABG’s support to the Eivo-Torau Constituency to develop the proposed redevelopment of the Manetai Limestone Project. He congratulated the people as well as the landowners and leaders for taking the first necessary step to creating economic opportunities on Bougainville. He added that the people as resource owners must take control of Bougainville’s political destiny through their participation in building Bougainville’s economy. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that the rights of the people as resource owners must come first which means the people have to give their consent on any economic development project on Bougainville. The President further revealed that the ABG will be launching its Lands Act this year which will reflect the Bougainville people’s aspirations as owners of their land and resources and masters of their own destiny. The Lands Act will complement the Toroama led ABG’s priorities on resource exploitation on Bougainville. As part of President Toroama’s first 100-day Plan, facilitating economic recovery in the region is high on its agenda. The ABG will also be looking at other projects on Bougainville such as the Special Economic Zone in Bana District and the Tonolei Project in Buin District.
