Toroama Vows to support people’s rights

President Ishmael Toroama has vowed to continue to protect landowner rights and the people of Bougainville as the region embarks on economic development throughout the region.

The President made this remark during the Official Launching of the Bana Special Economic Zone’s Incorporated Land Groups, Voluntary Land Registration and Social Mapping for the project.

The project was launched at Mamarego Primary School, Baba Constituency in the Bana District of South Bougainville.

“I’ve fought for our land, I’ve fought for our resources and I’ve fought for the identity of our people to become an independent nation,” President Toroama said.

“I have confidence that our people will work together with our government to ensure that this project is successfully implemented for the benefit of Bougainville,” the President added.

“I stand here today at Mamarego as tribute to our founding fathers and our revolutionary founding fathers to pledge to the people of Bana District and Bougainville as your President to assure you of the government’s support to this project,” President Toroama said.

President Toroama urged the people to continue to support the project as it progresses towards its development phase.

He said that there will be challenges along the way but the first step is always important as it signifies the people’s commitment to development.

As part of the President Toroama’s Six Point Strategy, Economic Development and Control is the second point.

Under this point, for Bougainville to prosper it will need resources owners to take ownership of their resources and work with the government to develop to develop their resources.

It also encourages investing into key economic sectors, agriculture, fisheries, forestry will promote participatory development through creation of more quality jobs and increase revenue and broaden tax base in Bougainville.

The launching of the project is the third high impact project being initiated by President Toroama and his government.

President Toroama has already launched the Manetai Limestone Project in Central Bougainville and the Tonolei integrated agriculture project in South Bougainville.

The proactive approach by President Toroama is to rid Bougainville of the dependency syndrome and to ensure Bougainville becomes self-sufficient to attain Fiscal Self-reliance.
