Mr Totavun further said that supplementary measures will be issued in Bougainville in an effort to reinforce the 12 National Pandemic Measures.

“Bascially we want to reinforce the measures that the National Controller has issued so that our people can follow those measures,” he said.

He said that the health authorities have been carrying out awareness on the preventive measures since 2020, however people have continued to be ignorant.

“COVID19 is real and it is here and on behalf the health team, I would like to appeal to our people. The people of Bougainville need to listen to what we are saying. COVID19 is real.”

“We need to follow the public health measures. Simple measures like hand-washing, wearing masks, keep safe distance from people.  If we follow them, we can be able to contain the spread of COVID19 in our region,” he cautioned.

While hospitals in other centers around PNG are beginning to scale down services, the Health Secretary has confirmed that services in the main hospitals in Buka and Arawa remain normal. However all health workers have been instructed to ensure that they follow preventive measures while providing necessary health and clinical services to the public.
