Deferral of Community Government elections and Atolls by-election

Community Government Elections and the Atolls By-Election have been deferred to a later date due to the delayed arrival of election materials.

Bougainville Electoral Commissioner George Manu made the announcement in a media conference this week, saying that the ship-borne materials will arrive later than the scheduled election dates which is supposed to be on the 18th October 2021. The materials will be expected to arrive within the last week of October but this is subjected to confirmation.

“At this time, it would not be prudent to speculate on any revised date of election until I receive a guarantee to the dates of the delivery of the materials,” said Commissioner Manu.

He added that polling cannot commence until the voting compartments and polling stationaries are in Buka because these materials are important and polling cannot be done without them.

He further stated that OBEC has attempted to prevent such situation from arising however, whilst OBEC is grateful for the support and assistance of the government and its departments, this situation has risen due to the untimely release of election funding.

Commissioner Manu will announce confirm dates for the revised election schedule when the materials arrive in Buka.
